528 Causeway · Banana River

Jaques

The south-wind answer. When everywhere else is onshore and awkward, Jaques is smooth — and it drops off fast enough to foil from the shoreline.

The rundown

Every coast has the spot that only works on one wind, and on the Space Coast a strong southerly is the direction that sends most people home. Jaques is the exception. Tucked against the 528 Causeway on the Banana River, it turns a south, southwest or west flow into sheltered, workable flat water — the causeway does the same job for southerlies that it does for northerlies at the 520 Slick.

What makes it a foil and wing spot is the bottom. Unlike Kelly Park or the Slick, where you can walk out for a hundred yards, Jaques goes waist to chest deep within a few feet of the shoreline. That means you are on foil almost immediately, and it means there is no shallow shelf to stand on, sort out a tangle, or walk a rig back upwind. It rewards people who can already water-start and self-rescue.

It stays uncrowded because most people do not think to check it when the forecast says south. That is the appeal — and the catch, because on a weekend you are sharing a narrow strip of water with people who are not there to ride.

Who it's for

Beginners: No. Deep water from the first step and a highway at your back is the wrong combination for a first session — learn at Kelly Park instead.

Intermediate: The session that saves a south-wind day. Comfortable water-starting and self-rescuing is the entry bar.

Advanced: Wing and foil in flat, sheltered water with nobody on it.

Hazards

  • Jet skis that are not looking. Assume they have not seen you and give them room.
  • Weekend tourists in the water. The causeway pull-offs fill up and people wade in right where you are riding.
  • You are launching feet from the SR 528 Causeway. A kite that gets away goes toward live traffic. This is the reason most locals wing here rather than kite — if you do fly a kite, have a hand and a clear plan.
  • Quick drop-off — no shallow water to stand in and sort yourself out
  • Manatees and stingrays — shuffle your feet in the shallows
