Central Florida isn’t a trade-wind destination and nobody should sell it as one. What it is, is consistent enough to ride a lot and varied enough that almost any direction is rideable somewhere.
The money season. Cold fronts every few days deliver hard north and northwest wind on the front side and clean northeast fill afterward. This is when the 520 Slick turns into a mirror.
The most consistent stretch of the year. Steady east and southeast sea breezes build most afternoons — exactly what Kelly Park and the lagoon spots want. Best time to learn.
Light mornings, sea-breeze afternoons, thunderstorms in between. Foil weather. Watch the radar — Florida storms build fast and the gust front will hurt you.
The first fronts come back, plus the occasional tropical system pushing long-period swell into Cherie Down and the beach breaks.
Sea breeze builds early afternoon, peaks mid-to-late afternoon, and dies at sunset. If the forecast shows 15 knots at 2pm in May, that’s a sea breeze and it will do what sea breezes do.
Frontal wind is strongest in the six to twelve hours after the front passes, then backs and fades. The good session is often the morning after, not the afternoon of.
Thunderstorm gust fronts turn a 15-knot day into 40 knots in ninety seconds. Watch radar, not just the wind meter. This is the one that actually hurts people here.
The lagoon reads differently to the ocean on the same forecast — less fetch on some directions, more on others. A forecast that looks marginal on the beach is often fine on the west side.
